French Director
While studying philosophy with Jean-François Lyotard at the University of Paris X, Jean-Noël Cristiani used to visit the Cinémathèque française daily. In 1968, he studied cinema with Jean Rouch at the University of Paris X. In 1973, he became a lecturer in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Sorbonne Paris V. In 1976, Le Silence des organes, his first feature film, was released. It is a reflection that he elaborated during his research in philosophy and in modern medicine. After this first film, he dedicated his life to documentary films.
In 1980, he participated in the creation of the Ateliers Varan and was involved as a trainer in several workshops in Romania, Georgia, Serbia, Kenya and Egypt. In 2010, he launched a Varan workshop in Corsica, which has taken place every year since. Films on particle physics alternate with films on musicians such as Max Roach, or on writers like Karen Blixen, Mika Waltari, Edouard Glissant, Maurice Chappaz… In 1987, after the making of a short film untitled Une exposition de Soulages, the painter asked Jean-Noël Cristiani to follow him in the creation of stained glass windows in the abbey of Conques. The shooting of this film lasted seven years. Awarded several times internationally, Les Vitraux de Soulages is followed by other films with the painter.
Le Marcheur, released in 2009, emphasizes the images that come from walking. He continues to explore this field with sketches of Turner's walks.
