Alice Diop

Born in 1979 in Aulnay-sous-Bois, Alice Diop fell into documentaries by accident. It was a happy encounter with a documentary by Eliane de Latour that made her realize the power of the messages that can be conveyed in documentaries, and the possibility of combining a sociological perspective with a cinematographic treatment. Alice is interested in those we don't see; she tells the story of cultural diversity. For Alice Diop, making a good documentary means telling intelligent stories through an artistic and human lens. Combating preconceived ideas to make society move forward.

After graduating from a Master's degree in History at La Sorbonne Paris 1 and a DESS (post-graduate diploma) in visual sociology, Alice Diop joined the documentary workshop at La Fémis film school.

Since 2005, she has been making creative documentaries for Arte, France 5 and Planète channels. Her films have been selected in a number of international film festivals and has won awards at Cinéma du Réel, the Créteil Women's Film Festival and the Brive Film Festival.

In 2022, she directed her first feature film, Saint Omer. The film won two awards at the 79th Venice Film Festival: the Grand Jury Prize and the First Film Prize. Saint Omer has been selected to represent France at the 2023 International Academy Awards.
