Hassen Ferhani was born in Algiers in 1986. He discovered cinema by chance at the age of 17, when director Lyes Salem filmed the short film Cousines (2004) in his neighbourhood. Taken by his curiosity, he ended up a script trainee on the shoot. He then ran the film club run by the Chrysalide association in Algiers until 2008. In 2006, he made his first film, a short fiction Les Baies d'Alger, which was selected in official competition at several international film festivals. In 2008, he took part in the FEMIS summer course, where he directed a short documentary, Le vol du 140, and co-directed a documentary film, Afric Hotel Tarzan, Don Quixote et nous, made in 2013, was shown at Visions du Réel and FID Marseille as well as in other international festivals. Dans ma tête un rond-point, his first feature film, was released in 2015. His last film 143 Sahara street received the best emerging director award at the Locarno film Festival in 2019.
Hassen Ferhani has been a member of the Ateliers Varan since 2021, and has taken part in several directing and writing workshops in France (Corsica, Occitania, Paris).
